These are almost two separate requests, but they inform one another. I finished The Power Broker a few months ago and have been on a major nonfiction wave ever since. Nearly finished with The Ghost Map now (generally about mapping/solving London's cholera epidemic & water infrastructure) and am looking for more recommendations.

In both of these books, the city is an integral part of the narrative. I love cities and learning about the way cities work, from the social maps and connections that make them so special and unique, to the infrastructure that is critical to their functioning.

I would love any recommendations about books like these two, especially The Power Broker (everyone seems to just suggest Caro's LBJ books…not looking for those now).

In case there aren't many suggestions about narratives around city planning, the second part of the request is for books like Say Nothing or The Snakehead (both by Patrick Radden Keeefe).

Less about physical infrastructure yet entirely about social & cultural infrastructure. The cities / regions play an important role in these books as well, but are very much about the social complexities of people within the context of these cities / regions, and the forces that bring them there / keep them there.

    1. Devil in the White City by Erik Larson is very detailed about Chicago in the 1890s. You may like it!
