Dog's Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron

So, it has recently come to my attention that a Dog's Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron is very sad. Owning a dog myself, should i still read the book? I mean it's a very hyped book, and people seem to love it, but i'm just not sure I want it considering I already have a dog, which might take an emotional hit on me. To the people who have read this book (and those have a dog and have done so ) , should I be comfortable reading this?
