I’ve been looking for adult cartoon books for years, but the answer I get is “just read graphic novels”. However adult graphic novels are absolutely not what I’m looking for. They have dense dialogue, detailed illustrations, and complex formatting that reject the idea of cartoons in favor of literary complexity to appeal to the literary community. I’m looking for something that embracing cartoons instead of being complex to appeal to the literary community. Think of books with illustrations like diary of a wimpy kid, dork Diaires, and big Nate or something that’s a graphic novel, but embraces cartooning like The Babysitters Club, dog man, and Amulet. I know they do exist. Scott Pilgrim is a good example and is even extremely popular within the middle grade literature community. Kurt Vonnegut’s and Simon StalenHag’s work are another good example, though not popular at all in the middle grade literature community, do embrace the concept of cartoons rather reject cartooning in favor of literary complexity that adult graphic novels use. So are there any other examples of adult cartoon books that actually embrace cartooning rather than reject it in favor of literary complexity like adult graphic novels do?
