11 year old girl with ADHD, needs to pick books to read for school reading challenge.
She enjoys historical fiction. Was told she liked a book “where there was a shipwreck and everybody died.” So, something with some drama 😆
Books have to be a certain length (I don’t know what that length is), so nothing too short please!

*The War That Saved My Life* by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley. There’s a sequel as well.
I was in 6th grade when I read Number the Stars. Obviously its based in nonfiction and is heavy subject matter, but an amazing book
The Sally Lockhart books by Phillip Pullman are good, they are detective mysteries set in Victorian times. Lots of drama!
Fever 1793 is excellent
It’s non-fiction, but maybe Nathan hale’s hazardous tales would be fun for her?
Robinson Crusoe might be a good option, though it could be a touch too “mature” for 11 years old.
These were (and still are) some of my favourites:
A Handful of Time by Kit Pearson. A 12-year-old finds a pocket watch that can send her back in time to the summer her mother was 12.
The Guests of War trilogy by Kit Pearson (The Sky is Falling, Looking at the Moon, The Lights Go On Again). It follows the story of two children sent to Canada for the duration of WWII.
Treasure Island is a classic, if the 1890’s sailor jargon is not a problem.
The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate by Jacqueline Kelly
*The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle*
Hatchet
Little House on the Prairie or American Girl. My daughter liked the American Girl History Mysteries
She’s exactly the right age for Anne of Green Gables. Anne makes even the most mundane activities dramatic and adventurous – and if she makes it through the series she gets amnesia, mistaken identity, and World War One
She could also just skip straight to the final book, Rilla of Ingleside, and read WWI from the perspective of a young girl
Maybe a novel by Thea Beckman? She usually writes historical fiction for a young audience. Her most famous novel is Crusade in Jeans.
Island of the Blue Dolphins
Thieves of Ostia series about Rome from Caroline Lawrence
