I really enjoy writing stories but now that I'm getting older, I'm realizing I should probably read books before I start writing them. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I usually prefer stories with darker topics and some sort of realism though I like science fiction too. Thanks!

      The Martian by Andy Weir

The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie

You Like it Darker by Stephen King. Some of the stories do have supernatural aspects, but none are too “out there”.

      Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery

Hemingway and Catcher in the Rye for the writing style (Hemingway does a lot with more simple language, and Catcher is an education in character voice).
