Hi there! I’ve been really excited lately by a certain type of book and author such as Jack Kerouac, Hunter S Thompson, and Henry Miller. They possess a kind of spontaneous, vivid, and bombastic appreciation for life which makes me come away from reading them feeling invigorated and able to overcome dullness with that uncrushable, reckless joi de vivre.
So, these books make me feel good and I want more like them. Problem is I almost feel a little embarrassed being stuck in this boys club of authors whose perspectives are refreshing and exciting, but obviously super male.
Don’t get me wrong, I understand their crassness and social transgressions as part of the work and characters which reflect certain periods and cultural attitudes, in fact, it’s a piece of some essential character of their writing ethos which I enjoy.
Still, being queer and trans, I wonder if there aren’t more diverse writers with similar feeling work (boisterous, counterculture, energetic, transgressive). I’d love to get some non-white, non-male voices in my reading. Thanks in advance for any recs!
