and in the style of Sylvia Plath, Shirley Jackson, and Flannery O'Connor. I'm just now venturing into Alice Munro, so time will tell with that one.
I like the dark, surreal aspects of their work. Bonus point if the stories take place 1930's – 1970. Double bonus points if it's by a woman!

Well, he’s not a woman, and he’s not particularly dark, but… I think you should try H. G. Wells. I particularly love and found indescribably memorable his short story “The Magic Shop.”
