My husband read all the Bernard Cornwell and Igguldsen series and loved them. I am his book-pimp. And I've failed! Any suggestions? He loves long historical novel series with swords and battles, but also deep characterization. Time period isn't important.

I’d happily suggest the book series by Christian Cameron. He has an education in history, practices medieval swordsmanship, and participates as a re-enactor. My favorites are the *Long War series* and the *Chivalry series.*
For a fabulous series of mid-3rd c. Roman warfare, I’d strongly suggest the *Warrior of Rome* series, by Prof. Harry Sidebottom Ph.D. It’s the finest HF I’ve read about Roman warfare, and Sidebottom is an Oxford scholar.
As a military history reader, the books are well-researched and plausible.
