Long story short, my mom is a big reader. Loves a good story. She had a heart attack, failed stent placement, open heart surgery, and she's in a bit of a rough spot as far as recovery and will be in the ICU for a couple weeks at least. She's barely conscious but she can hear us.
I am looking for some SHORT STORIES that I could read to her all in one setting. Anything fun, adventurous, engaging, distracting. It would be fun to sit down with her for 20-30 minutes and read to her. I've run out of other stuff to talk to her about.
She's probably more of a PG or PG-13 person, so keep that in mind too.
What stories should I read to my mom?

I recently read “The Little Prince” to my gran in the hospital. Such a profound little book. Prayers for your mom’s recovery.
I would try some TS Eliot poems. They’re very amusing, witty & clever. Start with Old Possum’s book of Practical Cats! 😌 all the best x
“Welcome to the Monkey House” by Kurt Vonnegut
The Basil and Josephine Stories by F. Scott Fitzgerald were entertaining and work together as a full novel as well as separate stories. Hope it helps distract your mom.
I recommend “All things great and small” by James Harriet. It’s a fun book where each chapter is kind of a stand alone “episode” the setting is pre WW2 English countryside, it’s about these country veterinarians and the fun adventures they experience. There’s a tv series based off of it from the 70’s that was recently rebooted I believe
Something familiar so she can easily know where you are in the story shoulmshe drift off and wake up again. Winnie the Pooh, or something else from her / your childhood, perhaps. Anne of Green Gables? Nothing stressful or violent or requiring a lot of attention.
*All Creatures Great and Small* by James Herriot. Chapters are fun to read, lovely stories, and basically stand alone.
I have a collection of George McDonald short stories that’s very nice, I think it’s a penguin classics.
My mom loves the book Skunk and Badger by Amy Timberlake. It’s a children’s book about woodland animals who are unlikely friends and how they learn to get along. She has Parkinson’s and likes to listen to the audiobook on days where she can’t get around well.
