Hi everyone! I'm looking to find a good novel to buy my mum for mother's day, but I'm low on ideas. Could anyone recommend please me a good novel or two?
Aside from the authors listed above, she's quite a big fan of William Boyd. I'd say she also likes: memorable characters; familial drama; intelligent thrillers; witty humour; and period settings. Though I'm obviously not expecting all of these elements!
Any recommendations would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Anything by Emma Donoghue or Jane Harris might suit.
I would recommend the slim oeuvre of Alistair MacLeod. His short stories were collected in the book Island, and his only novel is entitled No Great Mischief. I prefer the stories but the novel is also highly praised and won the International Dublin Literary Award in 2001.
