Three buddies and I started a book club and it's been incredible. None of us had ever been in a one before, and we're having some of the best conversations we've had in years.
But we recently realized that we (four straight guys in our mid-40s) have exclusively been reading male authors. Yikes. Time to end the sausage fest.
I'd love your book recommendations by female authors, preferably released within the last 5-10 years. Fiction or nonfiction. We tend to like books (and essay collections) that look at modern culture, incorporating some subset of politics, social issues, psychology, and/or general WTFery. Think Tim Kreider, Tony Tulathimutte, Vonnegut.
Thank you in advance!

Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver was great. About a kid who grows up in the Appalachians. I’m a 40s something dude, and loved this book.
You should check out Tender is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica. She’s an Argentinian woman. Based on your mentioned authors and subject matter interests, I think yall would like it a lot. I read a lot of the same authors, and I’ve just recently finished this book – granted it’s shorter, but I binge read it in a day. It’s amazing.
Piranesi by Susanna Clarke
Clair Keegan is fantastic, specifically Small Things Like These.
Demon Copperhead is also a solid choice as is being suggested.
What I’m about to recommend isn’t set in modern day but but does include commentary on many of the other topics you mention. It’s not YA sci-fi/fantasy which is apparent in the first few chapters in that it has a much more serious tone. I think it’s well worth it to read the first book to see if the trilogy may be your cup of tea.
The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin. It won a Hugo Award and, for that matter, the entire trilogy did too which is a remarkable feat.
The Handmaids Tale by Margaret Atwood if you guys have not read it yet.
