I’m not really sure what I mean by “modern humor” either, but something newer like Margo’s Got Money Troubles or I Hope This Finds You Well? Basically looking for something quick-witted (possibly self deprecating) humor, with banger one-liner after banger one-liner, and maybe with a little bit of heart?

Glorious Exploits. Laughed out loud all the way through and tons of heart. Can’t recommend it enough.
Might I introduce you to Robert Rankin? His humour is quite British but his absurdism combined with the characters reaction usually makes me laugh
The Guncle by Stephen Rowley
Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson
If looking for nonfiction try Jenny Lawson and/or David Sedaris
The Sellout by Paul Beatty.
