My partner is 21 years old and trying to improve his reading skills. He was never taught to read by his family or schools growing up, and now as an adult has the reading level equivalent to a 7-8 year old.

We've gone to book shops and libraries to look at books for him, but the problem with books aimed at children is… they're quite childish. They're not something he would enjoy to read and, honestly, I think he feels a bit embarrassed at the concept of reading books obviously aimed at children.

He's a big fan of the horror, psychological and thriller genres, or really anything that's a bit dark or suspenseful.

If anyone has any recommendations at all it would be greatly appreciated!

    1. Has he tried graphic novels? There are a lot of great adult graphic novels, and the text + images can really help with reading comprehension.

    2. “Patient twelve” by Mason FitzGibbon.
This is a quite interesting read. It’s about a girl who got kidnapped and got used as an “experiment” where they replaced her eyes with cat’s and she meets another patient with the skin of a snake and they try to escape. I know it may sound kind of childish but it’s not. It’s pretty interesting in my opinion.

    3. Stephen king has a ton of good variety in his books! There’s more incentive I think to read a book with a good movie. Manga and just graphic novels in general might be a good place to expand the things he likes too. But honestly what helped my reading as a kid was putting subtitles on everything and I watched a lot of old foreign movies not in English.
