Sci-fi horror or thriller about first contact with aliens

Looking for something that features humanity making first contact with an alien species, and it being a horrible encounter. I think I'd prefer a more "hard sci-fi" story, perhaps like Project Hail Mary, where things are explained in (what I assume are) realistic ways.

I'm not looking for a family on a farm being terrorised by a UFO or something. But instead all of humanity learning aliens are real because of the first contact
