I used to read a ton of books when I was younger, but now that I am in college and work I rarely have the time. I really want to get back into reading but I’m very specific about what kind of books to read.
Recently I’ve only been reading non fiction books about terrorism, war, and drugs like “On Killing”, “Beautiful Boy” and “If I Die in a Combat Zone” and I really like them. I’ve bought copies of all three. I like reading fiction thrillers or dystopian books.
When I was younger I really liked ya dystopian book series like hunger games, maze runner, unwind, and any of those type. I don’t like ya books anymore. I watch a lot of tv and movies like severance, the walking dead, the matrix, requiem for a dream, and the expanse.
What should I read? I want something fun and interesting to get back into reading. It would preferably be a series, male oriented, mature, and not too focused on romance or anything like that. I like dystopian and apocalypse stories best but I’m open to more than that. Thanks.

Wool by Hugh Howey
I’m reading The Long Walk by Stephen King/Richard Bachman right now and I’m having a great time!
The Road by Cormac McCarthy
Fever by Dion Meyer. Set in South Africa, about the end of the world following a novel coronavirus. Written before covid. An excellent novel
Not really male focused but has some interesting male characters and great description of the start of the deadly pandemic – written before the pandemic. Station Eleven by Emily Mandel.
Have you read Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins? It’s The Hunger Games #0.5 – it’s Haymitch’s story.
Try checking out Blake Crouch’s work:
– Dark Matter
– Recursion
– The Wayward Pines trilogy
(Full disclosure, Recursion is the only one I’ve read so far, but it was phenomenal, and the others have been super highly recommended to me by someone who is a pretty discerning critic).
The Chyrsalids by John Wyndham. Very short, suitable for a wide range of ages.
A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller Jr., a classic. No romance, as far as I recall. Male oriented.
Amatka by Karin Tidbeck. A recently written book, mature but not male oriented. There is romance but it’s not the focus and is almost completely offscreen.
Wastelands edited by John Joseph Adams, Brave New Worlds edited by John Joseph Adams. Two collections of short stories, one apocalyptic and one dystopian.
