I've been reading too much fantasy and thrillers and feel like I need substance. I love learning about women, experiences outside of the US (or at least non-white US stories) or anything that is not just your basic war story.

    Here's what I've liked and didn't like:

    Like:
    -The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah
    -Pachinko by Min Jin Lee
    -Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi
-The Girl With Seven Names by Lee Hyeon-seo
-A Long Way Home (Lion) by Saroo Briely
-Take My Hand by Dolen Perkins-Valdez

    Didnt like/finish:
    -Chain Gang AllStars
-I Who Have Never Known Men

Not your basic war story, but related to war, like the woman in the shadows: Lady of the Army: The Life of Mrs. George S. Patton

“A masterpiece of seminal research, Lady of the Army is an extraordinary, detailed, and unique biography of a remarkable woman married to a now legendary American military leader in both World War I and World War II.”

    2. One book I never see talked about is The Court Dancer by Shin Kyung Sook. If you liked Pachinko and The Nightingale I think you’d really like this one! Plus Anton Hur is an exceptional translator, the writing is so lovely and immersive.

    3. The Secret Book of Flora Lea by Patti Callahan Henry since you liked Nightingale. The Rose Code by Kate Quinn

Mary Doria Russell: Thread of Grace and The Women of Copper Country. Or anything else she’s written. It’s all fantastic.

    5. Non-fiction check out The Peking Express by Zimmerman. 1920’s China train heist.

    6. The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah. The Island of Sea Women by Lisa See. In the Time of Butterflies by Julia Alvarez
