I’m looking for books, fiction or nonfiction, about poverty in urban or rural America. Does anyone have any good recommendations? Contemporary (last 50 years) would be preferred but anything is fine.
The Pursuit of Happyness by Chris Gardner might work. You may have seen the movie adaptation with Will Smith.

Nickled and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich is a good book. It’s about how living on minimum wage isn’t enough to get by. She actually goes out and gets minimum wage jobs back in 1998 and the struggles she faces.
