This post is pure curiosity at this point. I'm a parent to a toddler. I love to read and we read a lot of books together and recently I started thinking about what types of books will exist for her when she gets older that will continue to grow her love of reading. I know Magic Treehouse books are still popular for lower elementary and there's the Diary of a Wimpy Kid/Dork Diaries franchise that (I think) kids still enjoy, but I was wondering what kids read after that before they are ready for YA. I know that I really loved Cynthia Voigt books, Phyllis Reynolds Naylor books (especially the girls vs boys series), Sweet Valley High, Holes, Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry (and the rest of that series), and Lois Lowry books, but other than Holes and The Giver I don't really hear any of those books talked about anymore, so I was wondering what books kids are reading in 4-6 grade these days.

I really enjoyed A Series of Unfortunate Events into middle school. I also remember enjoying those princess diary books that I don’t remember the name of and the Chasing Vermeer series.

Redwall! Percy Jackson is also extremely popular. Warrior Cats is still going too.

    3. So I think the genre you’re looking for is Middle Grade – geared towards kids 8-12. Katharine Rundell’s IMPOSSIBLE CREATURES is really popular right now, as well as anything by K. A. Applegate (THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN and others)
