Pretty straightforward, looking for action-oriented fantasy where despite an abundance of responsible adults that could (theoretically) step up, for some reason everything falls to a bunch of teenagers instead. I'd like something more in the vein of "our world" but with an unknown supernatural angle (like some kind of secret magical underworld or threat) as opposed to an outright magical setting. I'd like a female protagonist as well, but it's not required. And I'd REALLY like newer stuff. I feel like I never read anything new and I'm trying to change that.

I've really been on a kick with this sort of thing lately, so I'd really appreciate any suggestions. Thank you!

    1. BelmontIncident on

A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik, although that’s a bit sideways because the Scholomance is a school for wizards and the adults who should be stepping up are not in the building. Think Hogwarts with the danger and the in-universe politics taken seriously.

    2. The Luminaries trilogy by Susan Dennard, recent fantasy trilogy with a teenage female protagonist. It’s set in a secret society that protects our world from monsters born from a magical forest.
