    Hey all,

As the title suggest, I'm looking for a book that captures a haunting, strange atmosphere; preferably with the main character(s) exploring an area. I love the atmosphere in Silent Hill 2 for example, how a plot slowly unravels through all the mystery (if that makes sense).

As for books that come to mind, I think books from Sartre / Camus have that way of describing the strangeness of situations that I really enjoy. Dark Matter by Michelle Paver also comes to mind, has a very haunting atmosphere. Also, the beginning part of Dracula where Jonathan explores the castle for the first time.

August Blue by Deborah Levy is about a concert pianist in Athens, London and Paris and it’s very surreal and dreamy.

Palace of the Drowned by Christine Mangan is set during the 1966 Venice floods and it’s spooky and atmospheric.
