I’m looking for books that have high action but also dive into the mind, motivations, and emotions. I guess I’m looking for something kind of gothic in that sense, but I’m mainly looking for this balance of prose genres because it’s what I’m interested in writing, and I want to see how others have done it. I really like how The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo explored moral ideas and questions through a journalistic writing style because the author was a journalist, but I’m looking for something with that balance but more toward poetic writing rather than the hard facts of journalism. So, turmoil both physical and emotional, and high extremes in both directions. I’d hate to see a book that’s really action packed and just a bit thoughtful or one that’s more thoughtful and a glimpse of action (though I would prefer the latter). Thanks!

I am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes is an edge of your seat read from the perspectives of a frighteningly effective terrorist and the agent trying to identify and foil him.
Maybe a bit more actiony than you’re after but the author does a really good job of realistically explaining the motivations of both main characters.
Persona by Vincent Kane
