Hi all, I’m not much of a book worm, but am determined to change that. I’ve found that when I do read a book that catch my attention, I dive head first, but I’m having a hard time finding the style/genre I like.
I need something that grabs my attention right off the bat, has a great plot & characters. I love romance, fantasy, psychological thrillers and suspense, but don’t need to strictly read just those genres. Any recommendations would help, as like I said, not much of a reader, but really wanting to change that.

Shanghai Girls by Lisa See made me not only fall in love with reading but also in love with historical fiction. It got me on my reading journey as an adult.
Project Hail Mary made me fall evvvvvven deeper in love with reading and opened me up to Sci-Fi in general.
One of my very first books was Harry Potter
The Sparrow
Not sure it fits your bill, as it’s a kids book but for me it was Fergus Crane when I was a teenager. My young self loved the crazy world building in it. More recent stuff that I enjoyed and that I found was not hard getting into / didnt have a slow start: Logic Beach by Exurb1a, The Decagon House Murder by Yukito Ayatsuji, The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman, Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo, and for some good sci fi the good old Foundation by Asimov. I tried to give a mix of genres.
On the thriller aisle, try Dark Matter by Blake Crouch. I read this book in 3 days and couldn’t put it down, then lent it to my mum then husband and both finished it in a couple weeks which is incredible because neither are heavy readers (I think it was the only book my husband finished that year and one of about 5 for my mum).
On the fantasy aisle, try one of Terry Pratchett’s most popular books, and if you enjoy it there are many more where that came from. I would recommend Going Postal, Good Omens, or Small Gods to start, but I’m sure other commenters will throw in their favourites!
The Hobbit (which I read at age 11)
Watership Down (which I read at age 14)
I don’t remember what made me fall in love with reading as a child. But recently I read some books that reminded me why I love reading so much.
I’m Not Done With You Yet by Jesse Q. Sutanto and several books by Karen M. Mc Manus I can really recommend.
Ender’s Game, Flowers for Algernon, And Then There Were None, when I was a teenager.
Before those books I thought all great books were classics and those weren’t very interesting.
I took a long break before I started reading recreationally again as an adult. Wheel Of Time, The Black Prism, RedShirts, The Name of the Wind, brought me back to reading.
