I want a cliche fantasy, almost children's story type book. Something whimsical.

Fantasy, magic, dragons, monsters, a knight or hero, a princess or maiden, a quest.

In the mood for something not too dark but a typical knight goes on a quest, fights monsters, befriends mystical and talking animals and beings. Wizards and witches can be involved.

Romance to be involved. It doesn't really matter how, but hopefully something really touching, tragic, but happy or at least bittersweet ending to it.

    1. This tows the line between cliche and legitimately great plotforming and characterization, but I couldn’t recommend Naomi Novik’s Scholomance trilogy enough.

Book one is *A Deadly Education* and as far as I’m concerned checks all of your boxes. There IS serious verging on dark subject matter present, but it’s presented through the perspective of a 17 year old girl who is highly jaded (but in a whimsical way) and it often comes across as very funny even when the subject matter is serious.

I also found the romance factor to be both appropriate for the story and also extremely touching, especially by the end of the final book. There really isn’t much of it in book 1, but it grows as the series progresses.
