Please keep in mind that while you may be engrossed, you're probably an avid reader. I need something that'll likely appeal to anyone. I really do appreciate your help, I'm trying to redevelop my attention span, and reading helped me develop it as a kid. For some background, I'm 26, stopped reading ~16 years old, and while I mostly read nonfiction in highschool, fiction is what dragged me into reading books in the first place. TYSM!!!

Btw, I’m probably going to read a few of these, so be sure to upvote others comments, so I can see a consensus.
Edit: I’m not going to order a physical book until about this time tomorrow, just to give the upvote process time to work. I’ll still reply to a comment, if I feel it adds to the conversation.
The Martian grabs you from the very beginning
What sorts of genres do you like? Fiction is a very wide umbrella.
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline – it’s a really fun adventure and easy to get into, it’s kind of like book junk food.
Anthony Doerr has a couple good ones. Maybe pick something that suits your taste. All the Light We Cannot See and The Shell Collector were my favorite.
Emily St. John Mandel has some good ones as well. Station Eleven and Sea of Tranquility were my top favorites.
You Suck by Christopher Moore pulled me out of a reading slump a long time ago. I found it hilarious, you may enjoy it!
I;m going to recommend the Dark Biology Quartet by Richard Preston. The first three books, The Hot Zone, Demon in the Freezer, and Panic in Level 4 read like medical thrillers but are non-fic. The 4th book, The Cobra Effect is an end of the world virus thriller. All are fairly short and have great, tense writing.
I read Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn in an all-night reading frenzy while on vacation. It’s propulsive and doesn’t let you go.
Try The Hunger Games if you never read it. But don’t be discouraged if you’re not immediately taken in by a book by page 1. It’s a muscle and you need to work it.
*The Kite Runner* is one that had me engrossed from the opening chapters and really makes your jaw drop and also makes you want to cry. It’s about 300 pages. I’m not going to talk about it much here because I don’t want to spoil but I recommend reading the synopsis.
