I just finished this book today! I actually really liked it, but I have to admit that I didn't quite see the threads being woven through the book until the very end. When Su Su pulls Young aside at the end and pleads with him to "free himself" from all the emphasis he puts on numbers and symbols and signs, I could reflect back on earlier parts of the book and understand how Young had let life happen to him, with Su Su being the juxtaposition of that after he won the lottery and started traveling.
I was definitely sad when Erena broke up with Young and I was NOT expecting that!! I liked how there was the tension on the beach when Erena broke up with him between his "destiny" and Erena's – Young was in a way trying to take more control over his life by NOT letting Erena break up with him, as opposed to letting that destiny happen to him. But when 2 people are involved someone is always at the mercy of the other person's will/destiny.
Overall I thought it was such a charming book. I'm so glad I read it! I haven't seen much discussion on Reddit or even on BookTok so I wanted to start a discussion here and see what people thought of it!
One question I had was what people thought about Young's trip to China. Obviously the whole Wendy situation was unfortunate for Young but I'm curious what people made of all the detail the author went into for the rest of the trip where he was on the tour. What were we supposed to get out of that as readers?
