I’m looking for book recommendations on world history and how societies and civilizations have developed over time. I didn’t get much out of history classes in school (about 8 years ago), but now I’m genuinely interested—especially in understanding how the modern world came to be.
I’m most drawn to broad world history and the bigger picture of human development, with a light interest in political history when it’s part of that larger story. Ideally, I’m looking for one great book that offers a wide and engaging overview, but I’m also open to a list of must-reads or specific topics—especially if someone feels strongly about a certain title.
This is part of a personal learning journey and a longer-term goal to move toward a diplomatic or political career, so I’m looking for something foundational but accessible.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

“Guns, Germs, and Steel” by Jared Diamond (I think) would be a great and easy place to start.
A History of Civilizations by Braudel
