      >This whoppingly large volume holds 78 works organized in chronological order, from a 1926 comic sketch by E.B. White to Rivka Galchen’s “Crown Heights North” from 2024. Deborah Treisman, who has served as the magazine’s fiction editor since 2003, has selected the stories from an archive of more than 13,000 pieces of fiction. Her challenge was to produce an array of examples that is representative of the magazine but also compellingly diverse; that illustrates the evolution of styles and values that obtained across the eras; and, withal, that doesn’t overlap too much with the New Yorker’s many previous collections.
