My niece has a new initiative to read at school. She is a high reader (4-5th grade). However, she resorts to reading the Junie B. Jones books all the time. She does like chapter books with some pictures. I've tried the ABC mysteries, Magic Treehouse series and she had no interest. Also, tried to give her some of my favorites (Marguerite Henry stories, Tuck Everlasting, Anne of Green Gables, Black Beauty, Charlotte's Web) and she wasn't interested. One time she made me read half of a Captain Underpants to her, but did not care to pick up and read/finish herself when she went home. She wasn't interested in my sister reading Harry Potter with her. She always asks for recommendations from me, but then turns down every single recommendation to where I just avoid the subject with her because she doesn't seem interested in anything.
She has gone back to reading picture books (like Green Eggs and Ham) to "read more books," and while that is fine, it's frustrating because she can read something more challenging and my sister wants to give her some challenging. When given free rein to choose any book she wants, then she will go try to find toys in the book store or will find nothing at the library so free option doesn't help at all either. I'm running low on options, but she asks me for books every time I see her as I am constantly reading something.
She loves to dance and watch Disney movies.
(And I'm not saying there is anything wrong with reading picture books, but it's just that she holds herself back from branching out and I want to consider other options that may expand her reading a little. I think she just needs to try something but she is so picky it is very hard. She is just like this when she eats too hahaha!)
ETA: The initiative is to read more than the other students. I think she believes that if she reads shorter books that she will get more point because it is more books, but she isn't understanding that chapter books are worth more points though you don't finish them as quickly.
