As the title says. I'm getting into books (and narratives in general, so feel free to rec other media) about people doing some sort of survival diy or having to navigate a dangerous situation/ dystopia, but authors often let their characters make decisions that are obviously dumb just to drive the plot forward. Prefer when characters are skeptical of strangers, take their time for things, have backup plans. They can make mistakes, of course, but mostly think things through.

Have enjoyed Station Eleven, Maze Runner, Hunger Games and I Am Legend, some of Walking Dead, movies like The Hunt and parts of Zombieland, etc.

Details I'm looking for are things like preventative care (I Am Legend), survival stuff tailored to the city or the skills of the character (Zombieland, Station Eleven), and sensible use of shelter and resources.

I'm sure there are many, but so far online recs have just been "run, there are monsters!", with characters wasting valuable resources and places of rest and I'm not a fan of that.
    Thank for any ideas!
