My 6-year-old son is really receptive to books and especially loves poems in the style of Shel Silverstein—playful, rhythmic, and imaginative. I’m looking for poetry books (or even story collections) that help instill virtues or life lessons—things like perseverance, courage, kindness, humility, etc.—but still feel age-appropriate and enjoyable to read aloud.

Think something in the spirit of Rudyard Kipling’s “If—” or Roosevelt’s “Man in the Arena”, but geared toward a younger audience—language and themes that resonate with kids without feeling too abstract or preachy.

Bonus points if the poems are well-illustrated or lend themselves to bedtime reading.

Any favorites that have worked well with your own kids (or that you loved as a child)? Would love suggestions that strike that balance between meaningful and magical.

    1. Get the Ted Hughes and Seamus Heaney collection The Rattle Bag. Some will be too mature for him but there are definitely some for younger readers.
