After a nearly ten-year break from reading, I read all of the Bridgerton books (except one) in rapid succession. I am mentally beat. I'm only reading the last one out of obligation to see it through. If I read the phrase "ancient rhythm" one more time, I might metaphorically blow my brains out.

So, I stopped reading after it stopped being required by my high school. Honestly, well before that. For awhile, I wrote book reports on shit I had already read in middle school because how would they know? I was the new kid in middle school, and I read because I didn't have any friends. I read everything I found slightly interesting and by the time I was, I think, 12, I was reading shit like Trainspotting because I thought it would make me cool somehow.

Anyway, I'm an adult. I want to read something of substance and not because anyone says I should. I've spent so long being what other people want me to be. I want to find something that resonates with me and doesn't make me come off like a complete asshole when I try to talk to people about it. I don't want Don Delilo or Palahniuk or Murakami.

The only books I've read that I've ever actually loved were Catcher in the Rye and Watchmen. That was a long time ago, but it still stands. I don't even really know what I'd be into. Something good, but not because a syllabus said so, and not so pretentious that I gag reading it.
