I just finished The Rosie Project, after seeing it recommended here & in a few other subs. I was very optimistic about the storyline, but as my title suggests, I was not a fan of the ending. I was reminded of that famous post credit scene in the movie Dodgeball:
"Hope you’re happy. Good guy wins, bad guy loses. Big friggin surprise… That’s the problem with the American cinema, it can’t handle any complexity in it. Don’t make me think! I just want to be entertained!”
Yeah.. anyways. Right before this book, I read I Who Have Never Known Men, Convenience Store Woman, Severance – all were good, especially IWHNNM. Over the past few years, I've read a lot of classics and novels from the various literary legends. But I want to expand into more of the contemporary fiction (like within the 15-20 years), but I would like to read ones that are unique and don't necessarily have a clean-cut ending.
For reference, I LOVED Tommy Orange's There There. My Year of Rest and Relaxation & Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine were both interesting and thought-provoking, the former being great IMO. Exit West & Tinkers were excellent, especially the latter. I disliked A Gentleman in Moscow and kinda which I could get my time back on that one.
Does anyone have any recommendations for what I guess I'll call, "contemporary complexity"?
The world is choas, but I want to see that ambiguity than have it spelled out.
