I enjoyed Azincourt, especially seeing a siege and a battle from close up. That's what I most enjoy – getting in the heads of someone living through a time in the past and getting to understand what life must have been like.
However the characters were quite flat and the plot read like a fairly typical Hollywood film. Nothing wrong with that, I enjoyed it, but it is what it is.
I also 'enjoyed' All Quiet on the Western Front and The Way Back by Remarque, and those I felt had stronger characters, it felt like you were part of the gang and experienced the trauma with them. Those books changed my perspective and taught me something.
I'd love to find another historical novel that's very well researched and accurate but that has more depth to the characters and plot, ideally while still being a "page turner"! The period in history is less important, though I probably wouldn't go for a Europe focused WWII book or Cold War spy thriller, as I'm already quite familiar with those periods.
Any suggestions?
