After having not read a book for at least a decade (honestly probably closer to two), I decided to get back into reading.
First book I tried was Pines, by Blake Crouch. I really liked it, definitely a page turner. although I felt the ending was a bit soft. Still enjoyed it and it relit the spark.
Next I tried Chain gang All stars. I made in maybe 10 pages in. Not for me. Maybe it would get better, but I’m not the type to power through things and I decide very quickly whether or not I like something.
And then I gave project Hail Mary a go. Wow. What a great book. Loved it pretty much from begging to end. One of the best books I’ve ever read.
So, what should I read next?

Might try Ender’s Game or Ready Player One.
If you liked it because of a certain supporting character, you might like *Remarkably Bright Creatures*. I would die for Rocky, and I’d die for Marcellus.
Maybe the obvious suggestion but what about The Martian?
I enjoyed The Gone World by Tom Sweterlitsch.
If you enjoyed Blake Crouch’s writing style, Dark Matter and Recursion might be options.
It’s even better as an audiobook!!
Edit to add: The Robota of Gatham by Todd McAulty is a goodread
The Martian by PHM author
Star Splitter by Matthew J. Kirby
The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi
The Warehouse by Rob Hart
PHM is a tough act to follow. The Murderbot Diaries are very good. They’re engaging, fun and the main character is quirky and endearing. Most of the books are short (less than 250 pages).
Here are some that felt similar, to me:
* Have Space Suit, Will Travel by Robert A. Heinlein
* Dragon’s Egg by Robert L. Forward
* Seveneves by Neal Stephenson
* To Be Taught If Fortunate by Becky Chambers
Try Dark Matter by Blake Crouch
Dungeon Crawler Carl. Project Hail Mary is my second favorite book behind this series.
My friend Catherynne Valente wrote a wonderful book called Space Opera.
The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell
Angels and Demons by Dan Brown
The Uninteresting and Completely Unadventurous Tales of Fred the Vampire Accountant by Drew Hayes. It’s well-written, interesting, whimsical AF, strangely practical and relatable for a Vampire book, and it has a vampire in a sweater vest who meets improbable and impossible creatures and doesn’t want their magic or their might, he wants to do their taxes.
I read the Bobiverse series after PHM. It’s kinda in the same universe (pun intended)
Piranesi
The Bobiverse books and Murderbot Diaries
The Wayfarers series by Becky Chambers.
