I’m looking for something that will cross cultural boundaries and immerse me in real communities. Books that can make me feel like I am involved intimately with novel people in far away places. Preferably fiction within non fiction (some real world relevance)

I’d like something that emulates travel, without that average tourist traps.

    Also… I’m american

    1. How about Vikram Seth’s A Suitable Boy? Three families [middle-class Indians] in the early 1950s, post-partition and Independence, when class divisions and religious clashes were still very much in the forefront…whilst the main characters worry about getting suitable matches for their young people.

It’s very detailed, immersive, will tell you a lot about the times, the culture, religious differences etc whilst also telling a fascinating story. Seth is not quite Rushdie – if you want literary genius, read Midnight’s Children – but it’s a good read.
