Suggest me a novel for when you feel unmotivated as a writer. When you think, “is it worth it? Will people care?”

I want a book that reminds me of how amazing it is to be a writer. Or a book about a struggling writer. Or anything related to this really. I just feel really unmotivated and sad when I sit down and write, honestly.

    1. Hmm, well, there’s Stephen King’s On Writing which has portions of the struggle of creating and writing

Zen in the Art of Writing by Ray Bradbury is a collection of essays that detail his love of the craft

There’s the War of Art which highlights the forces–like no motivation–that stop you from writing

That said, while these are definitely useful to spark motivation, I feel that it’s best you understand these aren’t crutches. Motivation won’t always come.

If you’re a casual writer, yes, *maybe* it’s perfectly okay to wait for that creative spark. If you have any intent of going pro, you’ll need to learn to write even when your muse eludes you

OK, I have a weird sense of humor, but have you tried Stephen King’s novel “Misery”? Yes, it’s horror (and often gross, bloody horror) about a writer of best selling romances who gets kidnapped by his psycho “Number One Fan” after said writer is injured in a car accident. The number one fan demands that he write a sequel to his romance series…and she demands he write a sequel for her favorite character.

Of course, her ideas about motivation to write will probably give you more terror than inspiration. 😉

      On Writing by Charles Bukowski.

      “Writing

Often it is the only thing

      between you and

      impossibility.

      No drink, no woman’s love,

      no wealth can match it.

      Nothing can save you

      except

      writing.

      It keeps the walls from

      failing.

      the hordes from closing

      in.

      It blasts the darkness.

      Writing is the ultimate

      psychiatrist,

      the kindliest god of all

      the gods.

      Writing stalks dead. It

      knows no quit.

      and writing laughs at itself,

      at pain.

      It is the last expectation,

      the last explanation.

      That’s what it is.”
