After a long hiatus I got back into reading with Blood Meridian, loved it, then read just about everything else by McCarthy. After that I read some Faulkner and Beckett, I’m in the middle of Lonesome Dove and have Mason & Dixon lined up afterwards. Despite really enjoying everything I’ve read so far nothings quite scratched my McCarthy itch and I think it’s because I really like how despite having pretty straightforward premises like scalphunters, drunk fishermen and a boy wandering through the desert they have this grandeur about them that makes me feel like I’m reading some mythical folklore although nothing really magical happens.
The closest to that feeling I’ve gotten so far is As I Lay Dying and from what I read about Moby Dick I feel like it will give me that impression too. Does anyone have any recommendations for me?
Just a side thought- what do you think it is that gives off that impression? The prose definitely helps but I can’t really put my finger on what else. I’ve heard the phrase magical realism on here but don’t really know what it is, could that be it? From what I’ve gathered I think it applies to the books I’m referencing

I’m not sure if I fully grasp what you’re looking for, but I reckon One Hundred Years Of Solitude might be a book you’d love.
