Books where the protagonist is a side character in a larger struggle

I'll try to explain – I'm looking for fantasy /sci-fi books where there is a larger struggle on the background but we follow the story of a side character and his rule in it (if any).
Few examples :

Starship troopers, old man's war, a night in the lonesome october.

And my favorite – the black company.
