In the past a lot of suggestions I've received in this area have been around understanding specifically how to invest or which stocks and accounts are best for investing but I want to take a step back and understand money itself (including currency, assets, economics, financial literacy, related history etc..).

*Debt: The first 5,000 years* by David Graeber is an excellent place to start.
A great followup is *Black Marxism* by Cedric Robinson, the first half of which is a really good overview of the history of feudalism, capitalism, and socialism in Europe and how those systems interacted with the economic systems of surrounding regions. (The second half of the book is great too but might deviate from what you’re seeking.)
