I order books for a public library and it's a bit odd when I order a "novel" that turns out to be only 90 pages long. I actually really enjoy novellas as an art form, so I don't fully understand the need to lie and exaggerate their length.

Has anyone else noticed this sales tactic? Does slapping "A Novel" at the end of your novella's title actually increase sales? And do you think the bias against novellas is bigger in readers or publishers?

Some writers publish part of their book as a novella in hopes that a publisher will be impressed enough to offer a contract for more of the story.

Anne McCaffrey did this by publishing the first chapters of “Dragonflight” as “Weyr Search” in a magazine.
