      Read the book and decide for yourself.

      All else being equal I suppose justice would result in just punishment, but I’m afraid that’s not always the case. “Just” is one thing to some, something else to others.

      You are free to do so, yes. When it comes to translations there is no objective opinion, as any type of translation can be justified in accordance with the skopos theory. Unless the translation at hand is a clear mistranslation like “¿Que tal?=Where are you from” no one can tell you to translate in a certain manner. 

    4. this is what they did in the german translation, where it’s “fault and atonement”. I know too little russian to say whether that’s a decent translation.

      Why? These words translate directly to the words crime and punishment.
