I collect and read vernacular works on different mythologies and religions so I can better understand tons of content that is based on them. Mahabharata and Rāmāyaṇa for Hinduism. Poetic and Prose Edda for Nordic mythology. French and English canon books of King Arthur. One Thousand and One Nights for Arabic tales. The Iliad and, The Odyssey of Homer. You get the gist.
For Chinese mythology and lore, I bough the Anthony C. Yu's translation of Journey to the West a couple of years back. Through it, I think I've managed to better understand Chinese mythology based stories, including playing Black Myth Wukong some months back. Although I did have to do some research on Buddhism and Taoism.
However, there are some other works on Chinese mythology I've yet to buy and read, mainly:
- Classic of Mountains and Seas, Shanhai jing 山海经
- Investiture of the Gods, Fengshen Yanyi 封神演義
Issue is I cannot find a "definitive" English translation nowhere.
Any of you willing to pitch which translation/version of those books I should buy?
