Hi!
So I’m looking for some good reads to jumpstart my reading again. I was really good last year but started this year with a book that I just couldn’t get thru (Geek Love) no matter how much I tried. Just couldn’t connect even though the idea was interesting.
I’ve started Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller and I’m just loving it. I read Circe and loved it as well. I actually find myself reading her books so effortlessly that I keep questioning if it’s actually trash and I lack taste or she’s just an excellent story teller. Hah!
What I’m loving about Achilles is that is kinda queer without it being the main event. When I’ve tried to read queer writing in the past it all kinda feels like being queer is the main point of the story and there often seems to be a sort of commonality to them. Growing up gay in some conservative place, running off to somewhere else and having all the experiences etc.
I would like some books that the queerness is just kinda baked in and isn’t the focus so much. Or not any more of a focus than being a straight person is.
I’m not super genre specific. I’ve not read much horror or fantasy. Not ruling them out, I just don’t connect with elves and dragons and the few horror things I’ve read always kinda end up having cannibalism.
I did read the first few Anne Rice vampire books and actually loved them. They were kind queer as well. The whole vampire genre kinda feels that way.
I guess I’ll stop now before this becomes a short story on its own.
Thanks!!🙏
