As the title implies, I've been working my way through David Mitchell's works and I'm curious about what else similar is out there. In case it helps:

    • I've read four David Mitchell works so far (Ghostwritten, n9d, Cloud Atlas and Black Swan Green) – Number9dream is my favourite but they've all been excellent
    • I think what I particularly like about the Mitchellverse novels is the authenticity and believability of the various character voices, the prose, the humour* and how he balances his themes and his plot. I don't mind the mosaic novel / linked stories aspect, but it's nowhere near my favourite thing about these works and not what I'm thinking of when asking for recommendations
    • I generally like literary science fiction. Put another way, I often like literary books (i.e. where a book has themes and is about more than the plot/characters), and I often like speculative fiction, but I especially like books that tick both those boxes
    • Other favourite authors include China Mieville, Richard Russo, Simon Jimenez, Martin MacInnes and Dexter Palmer.
    • I've checked the earlier similar threads for ideas. I have read The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay (enjoyed it, but not as much as Mitchell), and On a Winter's Night a Traveller (didn't enjoy this – found it dull and confusing).

    Any suggestions very much appreciated!

    * I laughed like crazy at the Neal Brose part of Ghostwritten. He's awful but it works.
