Hello! I’m an English teacher at a Dutch high school. My students in year 1 and year 2 (ages 12-13-14) would love to read romance books for their school assignments.

They are very influenced by TikTok and would love to read books like It Ends With Us. However, the subject matter is still a bit too advanced for them, but they are really interested in romance.

The thing is that my students do not go with the “do not judge a book by its cover” mentality and think that many romance middle grade books are too childish. So I’m looking for a sweet spot for romance books that are not too childish looking but also not too advanced in terms of subject matter.

Also, because they are not native speakers I am looking for books where the level of English is also not too advanced.

    Thank you all!

When I was around this age some of my favourite books were by an author called Sharon Creech. Specifically:
      Walk two moons,
      Absolutely Normal Chaos,
      Bloomability

They all had a romance within them but honestly the story and plot itself was what shone through. Absolutely normal chaos was definitely the most romance leaning.

I’m English and since these were all set around American towns etc I used to love the foreign setting also (bloomability is set in swiss boarding school) so maybe this would also be a fun aspect for them too!

If I were able to add pictures in my comment I could show the covers I had as a kid because I definitely felt like they were more grown up too and would fit what your students were looking for in that sense ☺️
