I’m going to piggyback on a recent post I just saw. I’m in a really bad reading slump and have been since the beginning of the year.
A little backstory, I suppose, and genre interests.
I’m a big fantasy fan and my friend got me back into reading as an adult and I was really enjoying it for a handful of years. I have a solid collection of books now and some really nice collectible ones as well. (Sanderson signed and leatherbound, all of the ones released so far IIRC.) however, after expanding from Sanderson, I know this might irritate some, but he just doesn’t land for me anymore. After reading him, I’ve read The First Law, Prince of Nothing, ASOIAF, The Broken Empire, some Dune and some Malazan.
As you can tell, my interests have gone into of a more grim dark scope, which I really enjoy. I just find it very appealing.
Anyway, I changed positions at my job and I don’t really have any downtime at work, so it’s really hard for me to listen/read anything there anymore, which is the majority of where I got my reading done. I haven’t been able to get anything that I’ve really wanted to commit at home to read. Sometimes after work, I would lie in bed for hours just reading until I had to go to bed, it was wonderful.
I’m not a very happy guy or satisfied with my current situation, which is why I suppose I enjoy the grim dark genre, but I’ve tried expanding out to Existentialism, Metaphysics, and Epistemology. Mainly Existentialism, because of aforementioned state in life, mental state, etc. I was leaning towards Notes from the Underground, but didn’t grab me too hard, although it is short, I will try to give it a go.
Maybe someone out there has recommendations out there for me, it doesn’t have to be fantasy, although it is my favorite genre. It’s hard for me to enjoy something with a modern setting as I’m trying to escape modernity through literature.
Thanks to anyone who helps out with recommendations or just a nice comment. Reading has always really took me away and gave me something to put myself in to not think about my life/world, etc. have a good day.

Grimdark is such a great escape! Maybe try ‘The Black Company’ by Glen Cook or ‘The Lies of Locke Lamora’ by Scott Lynch both gritty with strong world-building!
