I've been fascinated by the American West since playing The Oregon Trail in grade school and I'd love any recommendations of books set in/about this time period. I'm open to fiction and non-fiction. I do have Lonesome Dove and Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee on my tbr. I'm also interested in books about the environment, wildlife, and National Parks for this time period too. Thanks!! 🙂

Desert Solitude, Buffalo Hunter Hunter
The Indifferent Stars Above
John Muir would be imperative. I’d also recommend the Journals of Lewis and Clark. For fiction, I recommend early anything by Wallace Stegner.
Wallace Stegner and John Steinbeck are worth considering.
I also really liked Eager: The Surprising, Secret Life of Beavers and Why They Matter by Ben Goldfarb
Audiobook was great.
“The Last Midwife” by Sandra Dallas
Prairie Fires is a biography of Laura Ingalls Wilder, and it’s a really interesting look both at her family’s experiences and at how she softened and changed them in her books. Would really recommend for a meta look at how the period has been portrayed.
Hearts West
The Indifferent Stars Above
