I’m looking for a book about what society could be like if there wasn’t a patriarchy. His society would be different if we never have a patriarchy, ever. Wanting more of an interesting thought experiment read rather than an apocalypse kills all the men type thing.
I’ve searched this sub many times and I know people are going to suggest the Power and the Gate to women’s country. Looking for something where there are men in the world but society was build around how women live and interact.

The book “**Ethan of Athos” by Lois McMaster Bujold** (while not exactly what you’re asking for) is a pretty amazing thought experiment about “what if the genders were separated”?
Ethan lives on a male-only planet, where all the information and transmissions received have all female mentions (and images) removed. It’s a homosexual-only planet, where the babies are made with uterian replicators (and are all male).
But then Ethan has to leave the planet to get more genetic material, and that’s when he first interacts with women! And he learns about all these other civilizations that handle things differently. It’s extremely well written, and rather fun, and does discuss the differences of men and women at length.
I highly recommend!
Another rec, though this is a romance, and a fantasy book, is the **”Dark Jewels Trilogy” by Anne Bishop**. It’s a society with a matriarchy where women have super powerful magic and the men are weaker (and often enslaved). HOWEVER, this is more a romance first, and has less intellectual things to say about societies with one gender.
It was fun–just, uh, not deep, if that makes sense? lol
Define patriarchy?
I read Egalia’s Daughters in college and it had the gender roles totally reversed. It’s was enlightening.

The Left Hand of Darkness (Ursula K LeGuin) is an interesting exploration of a non-gendered world.
