I've been rereading the Grimm's fairytales translated by Mrs. E. V. Lucas, Lucy Crane, and Marian Edwards, and have been enjoying it quite a bit. I was very into fairytales as a kid, but loathed popular fantasy such as Wings of Fire, Warrior Cats, and many other series. For a while I liked Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, and the Narnia chronicles, but lost interest when I tried reading them myself rather than my dad reading them to me. I also remember absolutely loving The Never Ending Story.
I'm thinking my boundaries are that the book can't be a retelling, or overly contemporary. If y'all have any recs, send 'em my way!

I’d recommend the author Robin McKinley. She does some retellings but also her own work. I’m not usually into a lot of fantasy but I think she’s a great author.
Lois McMaster Bujold’s *The Spirit Ring*. Set in medieval Italy. Fiametta wants her father to teach her magic but he resists becsuse she’s a girl. A tale of sorcerors, ghosts, goldsmithing, monks kobolds, and an evil warlord.
