So I very luckily landed a teaching job at a new public high school that is starting with its first 9th grade class in the fall. It seems like I'll be able to choose many of the foundational texts for that year as a department of two.

What novels, memoirs, nonfiction, and plays do you wish you read in 9th grade English? Bonus points for any short story recommendations (both whole collections and individual stories welcome)! Thank you, fellow readers 📚

I am not a teacher, but I will never forget my freshman year of highschool. My English teacher was amazing and started the year off with The Pearl by John Steinbeck. It’s a short easy read, but very good to engage with students.

I would also say that books by Kwame Alexander are good for poetry. Just don’t pick Swing. It was pretty bad.

Take this with a grain of salt if you will but I love reading so if you need recommendations, let me know!
